History, Memory, Identity - May 2003
‘I felt that my own work was now becoming identified with my person…whatever one paints must be constantly re-examined, torn apart, if that seems to be indicated, and reassembled in the light of new attitudes or new discovery.’
Shahn 1957: 38
The work for Dress has materialised through a personal exploration of history, identity and memory. The figure has always been a central theme in my sculpture and a vehicle for personal expression, but more recently I have used clothing and a range of recycled materials specifically to investigate personal and social identity.
Through this process of experimentation and transformation of media, I have been able to make connections with the past, present and future as they have emerged, taking into account body image and status, within and beyond boundaries of time and context.
