Ice Dresses - December 2005

The work for the exhibition, ‘Ice Dresses’ is autobiographical in nature, incorporating ideas which attempt to capture real and imagined moments from the past. In this instance, it involves the ‘freezing’ of time and material within the story of the Snow Queen fairytale. The garments on display ostensibly look at the relationship between fabric, snow and ice through the medium of polythene in combination with light. However, on another level, they address themes connected to childhood, relationships and journeys.

Extract from the ‘The Snow Queen’ by Hans Christian Anderson
‘Late that night, as Kai was getting ready for bed, he went to the window and looked out through the peephole. It was snowing softly. As Kai watched, the snowflakes piled one on the other until they took the shape of a woman. She was made of glittering ice. Her eyes shone like two stars, yet neither rest nor peace was in them. She nodded and beckoned to Kai. He jumped back in terror, and in that moment a shadow passed the window as if a great bird had flown by.’
