Melodies Unheard - May 2007

‘Was it a vision, or a waking dream?
Fled is that music: - do I wake or sleep?’

‘Ode to a Nightingale’ by John Keats

The work in this exhibition derives from a continued interest in memory, identity and the potential for capturing a moment in time from my own personal history. Reminiscences about my mother’s memorable ‘Venetian’ skirt have been the inspiration for this installation, caught on camera by my father on a warm summer’s day in 1963. Female members of the family have been gathered together in the garden with the pet budgie to pose for the snapshot.

The figure has always been a central focus in my work and using suspended light in combination with moulded recycled materials has allowed me to address particular qualities as well as conflicts inherent in human relationships. In this piece, I have been considering those most associated with close family ties, such as protection and entrapment, and how these are central to thoughts, feelings and actions across successive generations.
